Senator Margaret Wood Hassan, D-Exeter
Senate District 23

Sen. Margaret "Maggie" Wood Hassan was elected to the New Hampshire Senate in November 2004. She currently holds the position of Senate Majority Leader.

The senator serves as the chairwoman of the Commerce, Labor and Consumer Protection Committee, Vice-Chairwoman of the Capital Budget Committee and as a member of the Finance Committee.

She also is chairwoman of the Veteran's Employment Commission and serves on the State's Veteran's Advisory Committee.

Hassan's legislative priorities center on ways to improve the economic conditions for New Hampshire's businesses and working families, including increase the supply of affordable workforce housing and improving access to affordable health insurance and health care. Senator Hassan also believes that New Hampshire's high quality of life and future success is tied to strong support for a varied and inclusive education system, environmental protection and the development of a "green" economy. Her legislative priorities and record reflect a broad range of initiatives to support that philosophy.

The senator is married to Thomas E. Hassan, and has two children, Ben and Meg. She is a practicing attorney at law, and earned her juris doctor from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, and her bachelor's degree from Brown University in Providence, R.I.

Born in Boston, Hassan is an Exeter resident and has been involved in a variety of community and civic activities, including service on the Advisory Committee to the Adequacy in Education and Finance Commission, as a volunteer for Exeter public schools, as a board member of Community Developmental Services and as a board member of the Disabilities Rights Center.
